2X Global: Gender and Climate Finance Toolkit

The 2X Global Gender and Climate Finance Toolkit serves as a guide to help investors, fund managers and other stakeholders to identify and prioritise gender-smart climate finance investment risks and opportunities throughout the investment cycle. CoSustain Consulting oversaw the overall content and production of this work harmonising input from the 2X Global community.

2X Global’s Climate and Gender Community of Practice, mobilises its community to unlock capital with a gender lens within mainstream climate finance, by providing opportunities to learn about gender-smart climate finance deals, including examples, tools, and frameworks. The community identified a need to develop guidance for investment practitioners and others, on the why, what and how of bringing together the gender and climate lenses in investments.

“As the climate crisis has intensified over the past 10 years, the increased focus on the power of diversity to speed up climate action and the push for climate solutions to solve key gender equality challenges are taking centre stage. Over the past five years I have had the pleasure of working with Chintal and CoSustain Consulting unpacking the climate-gender nexus to develop the 2X Gender & Climate Finance Toolkit and exchanging with the broader 2X Global community on how we can dig deeper. The journey is still long but together we have started it.” Moa Westman, Gender Specialist, European Investment Bank

Context

Given our experience of gender and climate finance, we were well positioned to support the Climate and Gender Community of Practice to develop guidance for its members. We advised the co-leads of this project, EIB, EBRD and BII on the content and production of the toolkit ensuring that the output is harmonised with the 2X Criteria and other standards while being practical and actionable. We played a key role in providing technical input, oversight and quality assurance of the final output. To ensure uptake, we delivered a training session for EIB, EBRD and BII staff and webinar for 2X Global members.

Approach

At present, the 2X Green toolkit is still one of the most used knowledge products produced by 2X Global. It has been cited not only by investment practitioners, but also for academic research. In 2023 alone, it has reached over 2000 readers.
