Northern Uganda transforming the economy through climate-smart agriculture

The FCDO-funded Northern Uganda Transforming the Economy through Climate-Smart Agriculture (NU-TEC FS) was looking to mainstream gender into the support it provided to Equity Bank Uganda to increase lending to women in agriculture.

A key barrier to growth of the largest sector in Northern Uganda, agriculture, is a lack of access to finance. This disproportionately impacts women farmers and women-led agribusinesses. The Financial Services component of NU-TEC FS worked with Equity Bank to derisk financing for climate-smart agribusinesses, including with a gender-lens, in Northern Uganda.

Context

NU-TEC FS asked CoSustain Consulting to develop a gender strategy for Equity Bank to  apply a gender lens to its products and services. CoSustain Consulting was able to bring its experience in the agriculture sector in Africa, in climate and gender finance including the 2X Criteria to develop practical recommendations.

Approach

Equity Bank was able exceed the overall targets including the gender qualitative indicators. NU-TEC has contributed to the economic transformation of the agricultural sector in Uganda and was an important catalyst for green growth with its support for climate-smart agricultural practices.
